An earthquake in western Nepal has killed at least 143 people and injured many others. Rescue workers searched for survivors amid the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The earthquake occurred late Friday night and was centered about 500 kilometers west of the capital, Kathmandu. Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring Center said the earthquake intensity was 6.4. The United States Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 5.6 with a focal depth of 18 kilometers. It was the most serious earthquake in Nepal in eight years. The earthquake was felt as far away as New Delhi, the capital of India.

There is a mountainous area near the epicenter. The first batch of rescuers arrived in the disaster area early Saturday morning. Officials said that communications were interrupted in many places and the death toll was expected to rise.

China expresses its condolences and concern over the casualties and property losses caused by the earthquake, and is willing to provide emergency humanitarian assistance according to the needs of the Nepali government and the victims.
