The game board is already set up, but so are its pieces. Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune got the last two places for the ATP Finals on Friday, which will be played at the Pala Alpitour in Turin from November 12 to 19. Zverev and Rune join Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fight for the title of ‘master of tennis’.
Four of the stars have already triumphed at the Nitto ATP Finals. Six-time champion Djokovic can break his tie with Roger Federer for the most titles in the history of the year-end championships (since 1970). Zverev won the title in 2018 and 2021, while Tsitsipas triumphed in 2019 when he was 21, becoming the tournament’s youngest winner since 20-year-old Hewitt in 2001. Medvedev lifted the trophy in 2020. Of the eight, only Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev, the top three in the ranking, know what it means to be number one in the world. If the Serbian achieves the feat for the eighth time, extending the record, he would also reach 400 weeks at the top of the rankings on November 20, the day after he finishes the tournament. He would become the first player to reach such a milestone.
“Congratulations to all the players who have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals 2023. It is the reflection of a truly impressive season. This is a unique tournament, featuring only the best of the best, with a lot at stake for the tennis players. The stage is now set for an incredible final showdown in Turin,” explained ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi. It should be noted that seven of this year’s eight competitors have qualified or played in the ATP Next Gen Finals, including three champions: Tsitsipas (2018), Sinner (2019) and Alcaraz (2021).
