(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hwang Cheol-hwan = Amid controversy over the Israeli military’s airstrike targeting the Jabaliya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, attention is being drawn to analysis that a large aerial bomb weighing nearly 1 ton was used in the attack.
The American daily New York Times (NYT) analyzed videos, photos, and satellite images of the damage site with weapons experts and found that at least two aerial bombs weighing 2,000 pounds (approximately 907 kg) were dropped on the 3rd ( local time) reported.
Two huge pits with a diameter of 12 meters remained in the ruined refugee camp because they matched the traces left when this type of weapon exploded when dropped on light sandy soil.
The 2,000-pound aerial bomb is the second largest aerial bomb possessed by the Israeli military, and can be used in targeted air strikes when equipped with the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), an upgrade kit that grants precision strike capabilities.
Mark Galasco, a military expert who participated in a 2016 study conducted by Australian weapons consulting firm Armaments Research Services (ARES), said the Israeli military may have used a ‘delayed fuse’.
This means that instead of exploding as soon as it touches the surface, it would have burrowed into the ground and exploded to deliver destructive power deep underground.
A 2,000-pound aerial bomb could actually be used to attack underground facilities.
Galasco added that it is not clear from visual data alone whether the ‘Bunker Buster’ series warhead, a weapon specialized for attacking underground facilities, was used.
The Israeli military, which conducted airstrikes on the Jabaliya refugee camp for three consecutive days starting on the 31st of last month, explained that it was a measure to destroy the military facilities of the Palestinian armed political faction Hamas hidden beneath the refugee camp and eliminate its commander.
However, it has not been revealed specifically which weapons were used and how much.
Health officials in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip claimed at least 400 people were killed or injured in airstrikes on the Jabaliya refugee camp.
In relation to this, voices of criticism and concern are growing in the international community over the attitude of the Israeli military, which appears to have no regard for civilian casualties in order to annihilate Hamas.
On this day, Politico, an American political magazine, reported that immediately after news broke that Israel’s airstrike on the Jabaliya refugee camp resulted in the death of many civilians, the U.S. government demanded an explanation from Israel.
A U.S. government official said, “The United States has demanded an explanation for the first attack on Jabaliyah,” and that the talks “have taken place in the context of calls for Israel to do more to avoid civilian casualties.”
However, separate from this, the official said, “The United States’ position to support Israel’s right to self-defense remains firm.”
Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on the 7th of last month, killing over 1,400 civilians, soldiers, and foreigners.
In response, Israel launched a retaliatory war, vowing to annihilate Hamas, and Gaza health authorities announced that 9,000 Palestinians have died in the Gaza Strip to date.
