Marshmello Releases “Sugar Papi”: A Latin-Inspired Album with Collaborations and Grammy Nomination

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Days from knowing if he is the winner of his first Latin Grammy nomination, DJ and producer Marshmello releases “Sugar Papi”, an album full of collaborations with artists such as Young Miko, Tiago PZK, ChocQuibTown and Polimá Westcoast, in addition to her hit “El merengue” with Manuel Turizo for which she competes in the category of best tropical song.

Marshmello visited several Latin American countries as a child and listened to Latin music when he was younger, but over time he said he became much more familiar with the artists and rhythms of the region thanks to his work as a music producer.

“Latin music was played in the clubs, it was everywhere. “It felt very natural for her to want to work on a Latin project,” she said in an interview via video call from Miami.

For his album he had a general idea of the artists he wanted to collaborate with. One of the first was Manuel Turizo, with whom his hit “El merengue” quickly emerged, which was on the Latin American popularity charts for months and earned him his nomination. Marshmello and Turizo met the same day they created the song, originally created as a joke with Mexican producer Edgar Barrera to respond to Turizo’s “La bachata.”

“It was a very, very good vibe, hard to match, but I felt like it would be like that on this album,” Marshmello said. “It was kind of a joke, thinking what would happen if we did it… Then we realized it was a real song.”

It was also his first time creating a merengue song, a genre he knew from the dance floors.

“It was fun,” he said. “My wife has tried to teach me and she wouldn’t say I’m the best dancer, but I try my best,” she said.

His foray into Latin music also earned him recognition as crossover artist of the year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, where he performed the song live with Turizo.

“I was very, very happy and surprised, and grateful, very grateful; “That was a very good day for my entire team,” he recalled.

Now the DJ plans to attend the Latin Grammys that will be presented on November 16 in Seville. “That’s really crazy too, I’m just happy to have been nominated,” he added.

As a producer, Marshmello said one of the keys is knowing how to work in the moment and learn very quickly how things will go. Additionally, he likes to give artists freedom for lyrics.

“I told them: ‘I will enter your world, bring elements to me for my production and my style,’” he said.

The title of “Sugar Papi” is a kind of Spanish, or Spanglish, version of his stage name, which in English means marshmallow.

“I love the name, that could be my nickname, you know, I’m Marshmello,” he said. “It’s fun, the whole experience is fun, the name is fun too.”

“Tusi”, with LiL CaKe and Brray, and “Where are they that I don’t see them”, with ChocQuibTown, are some of the songs that reflect this spirit.

“They are so cool and unique, I was excited to complete that song and I’m grateful that it’s on the album,” he said of his collaboration with the Colombian trio.

There is also Brazilian funk with “Sou musa do verão”, with Luisa Sonza, trance and a lot of electronic music in “Super High”, with Polimá WestCoast, as well as space for a little pop with “Como Yo :(”, with Tiago PZK , one of the songs he released as a preview of the album, and “Say Woah!”, with Nicky Jam, where the Puerto Rican’s voice approaches the ballad over reggaeton beats.

“What I like to say is that I put my ear for pop into some of these songs,” Marshmello said. “American pop and the ear for pop in general that I have in music. And that’s why I like Tiago’s song PZK song too. I like to think that it has a lot of pop with the guitar and percussions that are different.”

“Tempo”, with Young Miko, and “Esta vida”, with Farruko, were other previews of the production. With the release of the album, Marshmello premiered the “Alcohol” visualizer with Anuel AA and asked fans to keep an eye on YouTube as she hopes to release more videos from the album.

After his presentation at the EDC festival in Mexico City at the beginning of the year, where many children were seen with Marshmello’s characteristic white helmet with black eyes, his participation in the opening ceremony of the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador and his recent Halloween night set at Road To Ultra Chile, the musician will perform this weekend at Ultra Guatemala and Road To Ultra Costa Rica.

“It’s crazy, very good vibes,” he said of his live performances.
