Nokia Files Lawsuits Against Amazon and HP for Unauthorized Use of Video Technologies

Nokia has filed a three-continent lawsuit against Amazon for alleged unauthorized use of its video-related technologies in streaming services and devices, and has filed a separate lawsuit in the United States against HP for unauthorized use of proprietary video-related technologies in HP devices.

Arvin PatelNokia’s head of new segment licensing, said the lawsuits were filed Oct. 31 in the United States, Germany, India, the United Kingdom and the European United Patent Court.

“Nokia is seeking compensation for the use of key inventions, royalties that we will reinvest, along with significant additional investment, into the development of next-generation multimedia technology.”

Since the early 1990s, Nokia has been a leader in the development of video technologies, including video compression technology that enables the sharing of large data files over the Internet. Without this technology, it would not be possible to stream high definition video or hold video conference meetings.

Nokia inventors played an important role in the development of all video codes accepted in the market, from the H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard introduced in the early 2000s to the H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard completed in 2020 . Each generation of codecs has halved the required bitrate compared to its predecessor without any degradation in image quality. This technology is found in virtually every tablet, PC, smart TV, smartphone, and any other device that plays video, such as cameras, security systems, and video doorbells.

There are many corporate lawsuits around the world: most recently, 41 states sued Meta over claims about the mental health of young people at risk from Instagram.

“I want to emphasize that litigation is never our first choice. In the vast majority of our patent license agreements, we agree amicably. To put that in context: since 2017, we’ve signed or renewed more than 250 licenses – including licensing agreements with Apple and Samsung – and initiated just 6 lawsuits. We’ve been in negotiations with Amazon and HP for years, but sometimes litigation is the only way to respond to companies that choose not to play by the rules others follow and respect. And let’s be clear: Amazon and HP benefit greatly from Nokia’s multimedia inventions,” said Patel.
