SKA hockey club forward Ivan Zinchenko was “almost killed” during a fight on the ice in a match against Omsk Avangard (3:5), head coach of the St. Petersburg team Roman Rotenberg said emotionally. According to him, the hockey player was left with a scar for life.

“I would like to note a blatant incident on the ice. Zinchenko was almost killed on the ice. How did this happen? There’s a fight going on. Hockey fight, men’s sport. The guys got into a fight, the fight is over, the referees arrive, the opposing player continues to hit the prone opponent in the head. He’s scarred for life! Scar. It could have been much worse. Scar for life! If it had hit him in the temple, he would have died,” Rotenberg said.
In his opinion, such things are unacceptable in the KHL; the referees should have intervened in the episode to separate the two hockey players. He also noted the actions of Avangard forward Mark Verba, who continued to hit Zinchenko when he was already lying on the ice.
“These are not even fights without rules! There are no such rules on the street when people fight! There are rules there too. We have no rules in the league today! Everyone saw everything. You can’t fool people. Our strength is in truth! We will all work together,” Rotenberg emphasized.
He added that he plans to appeal to all authorities to end this “lawlessness.”
The fight occurred at the beginning of the second period. As a result, both hockey players, Mark Verba from Avangard and Ivan Zinchenko from SKA, received a five-minute penalty.
Let us remind you that SKA lost to Avangard with a score of 3:5. For the army team from the Neva, this defeat was the third in a row and 12 in 24 regular season matches. The team dropped to ninth place in the Western Conference table.
