Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder is actually not exactly known for his sensitivity. Now, however, he is publishing a thoughtful post in memory of his parents. The occasion is All Saints Day, which is celebrated on November 1st and is a public holiday in Bavaria.
Actually, Markus Söder should be swimming on a wave of happiness. After all, he was just re-elected as Bavarian Prime Minister. After the state elections in Bavaria, he can also continue his coalition with the Free Voters.
But just one day after his confirmation in office, the 56-year-old spoke out with unusually contemplative words. The specific occasion is the Christian memorial days of All Saints and All Souls, which are celebrated on November 1st and 2nd respectively. While the saints are commemorated on All Saints’ Day, which is a holiday in Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland in addition to Bavaria, All Souls’ Day is dedicated to the memory of all the deceased.
“On All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day I think particularly of my deceased parents,” wrote Söder in an Instagram post about a photo that shows his parents on their wedding day. “My mother Renate died at the age of 56 and my father Max at the age of 72,” the CSU politician continues.

Looking back, a lot of things are different than what you experienced as a child or young person, writes Söder and adds: “When you have children yourself, so many impressions repeat themselves, even if the times are completely different. We are more similar to our parents , than we admit – and they are part of us and we of them.”
Therefore, for him, children are the greatest happiness “and perhaps also the true meaning of life,” explains Söder. “In any case, I miss my parents. And even though as a teenager I thought I could and knew everything – in reality, today I would sometimes like advice and just spend time with them,” the Bavarian Prime Minister becomes emotional.
He also misses his late father-in-law Günter, who was “a friendly father figure” after his father’s death, very much, Söder opens his heart before ending with the words: “Today we think of all the deceased and keep them in good spirits also painful memories. We miss them, I miss them and hope they are well protected.”
