Discovering Women’s Impact: Gender Equality and Women Artists in the Visual Arts by Semíramis Gonzales

CYCLE OF MUJERES, ART AND HISTORY. “THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE: GENDER EQUALITY AND WOMEN ARTISTS IN THE VISUAL ARTS.” SEMÍRAMIS GONZALES

In this talk we will take a look at the relevance that women artists have had for decades, and how they have developed their work despite the continuous silencing they faced. Spanish and international artists who broke molds and made female problems visible through their creative works. Because they have always been there, even though they tried to hide them.

Semiramis González (Gijón, 1988) is an independent commissioner. She has a degree in Art History from the University of Oviedo and a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art History and Visual Culture at the Reina Sofía Museum, from the Complutense University. She is currently the curator of “Vision and Presence”, a cycle of performances by women artists at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum. She has curated projects such as “Futuro Presente” at Sala Amadís (Madrid); «Wrong is not my name. Art against sexist violence» at LABoral Centro de Arte (Gijón); or “The tree of rage” at the EACC in Castellón on feminism with Spanish and international artists. He has worked with museums and institutions such as Es Baluard Museu (Palma de Mallorca), PHotoEspaña Festival, SCAN Tarragona (International Photography Festival), the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno – CAAM of Gran Canaria, FIEBRE Photobook, the IAACC Pablo Serrano (Zaragoza ), or the Alcobendas Art Center, among many others.
