Young Woman’s Stroke Linked to Combination of Drugs: Donna King’s Story

Jakarta

A young woman suffered a stroke at the age of 26, several months after giving birth. She was suspicious that her condition arose because she had taken a combination of drugs before giving birth.

The woman is Donna King in County Durham, England. Donna experienced a stroke about 11 years ago, when Donna was at home with her four and a half month old baby.

Now that Donna is 37 years old, only one of Donna’s arms can function normally. According to him, his condition was triggered by the side effects of using combined contraceptive pills.

Donna admitted that she had never experienced the ‘typical’ symptoms of a stroke such as vertigo or hearing problems. When a stroke occurs, everything just happens without any symptoms. Donna’s husband, Nicky, found Donna lying in the bathroom and immediately called an ambulance.

“I could confirm that Millie (Donna’s daughter) was in bed and luckily I didn’t roll over. But I couldn’t see clearly. When the paramedics arrived, they thought I had a serious ear infection. They told me to rest, but I begged asked to be taken to the hospital,” said Donna, quoted from Mirror News UK, Thursday (2/11/2023).

Over time, Donna’s condition continued to worsen. He lost his ability to speak normally, and his walking ability also decreased. He was in critical condition and underwent treatment in hospital for three months.

“I was critical for the first few weeks. I was even worried about being able to see Millie until after a few weeks in hospital when I was more stable. I had to use a spelling table to communicate and was carried around in a wheelchair,” said Donna.

Even though she can now talk and walk normally, Donna admits that only one of her arms can work normally. Donna feels that she has missed various roles that she should play as a mother.

“I missed out on so many milestones as a mother. But Nicky was amazing and Millie learned to do so many things on her own. Like doing her hair and tying shoelaces. I’m so proud of her. We learned to do so many things. Everything together while I was in recovery, ” he concluded.

Now, Donna works to support the National Health Service (NHS) and the Stroke Association. He hopes that with his current job, he can help people who experience illnesses similar to his.
