Unforgettable Season: Bayern’s Shocking Exit in the 2023/24 DFB Cup – A Blast from the Past

You have to look back a long time to find a DFB Cup like the one in 2023/24. On board at the time: Bayern, who were kicked out by BVB, RWE, MSV, Schalke and SG Wattenscheid.

What a strange DFB Cup season. The favorites fly out of the competition, you can’t see that quickly.

With the mega surprise that FC Bayern Munich embarrassed themselves on Wednesday at third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken. Bayern are in good company: 1. FC Köln, Mainz 05, RB Leipzig, TSG Hoffenheim, SC Freiburg, FC Augsburg, Werder Bremen, 1. FC Heidenheim, Darmstadt 98, Union Berlin and VfL Bochum are also ahead of the upcoming one Round of 16 already out.

Six Bundesliga teams among the last 16 teams has never happened before. One would think. But that was also the case in the 1992/93 season. At that time there was still a qualifying round in which the then Bundesliga club SG Wattenscheid embarrassed themselves.

In the end there were only six teams from league one in the round of 16. With parallels to the current competition. Bayern were thrown out early, back then at BVB. And FC Homburg, who are in the round of 16 after beating Fürth, were also in the last 16 back then. They were eliminated there against 1. FC Nürnberg.

RWE will also remember the year fondly, because they defeated Schalke 04 in the first round before the Essen team had to give up against Chemnitz in the round of 16. By the way, the winner this year was Bayer Leverkusen.
