The October 7 attack on Kibbutz Beeri was devastating and left three generations of the Cohen family dead.
Ohad Cohen, 43, the father, was killed by Hamas terrorists as was his daughter Mila, aged 10 months, then in the arms of her mother, Sandra.
Seriously injured, Sandra managed to escape and survived her injuries, as did the couple’s two sons.
During the Hamas attack, Ohad’s mother Yona, 73, was killed in her home on Kibbutz Beeri. She was not found until 11 days later, and on October 22, the three family members were buried, side by side, at the Yarkon cemetery in Petach Tikvah.
A friend of Yona, Sharon Abramovitz, wrote: “I will miss our telephone conversations, your support, your good humor, your patience and your incredible sensitivity, which gave me so much strength. You always smiled like the sun. »
Ohad was, for his part, a long-time fan of Maccabi Tel Aviv FC. He was a Sales Project Manager for Elad Software in Sderot.
On Facebook, Elad wrote of Ohad that “it was hard not to fall for his shy little smile. We could talk about anything with him. He was a smart, funny, talented man – a true friend. A rare blend of kibbutznik frankness and great sensitivity. »
Last year, Cohen was chosen by the NGO “51 for the Promotion of Gender Quality” as one of 51 people “who contribute to a better future”.
A friend of Ohad, Shai Baruch, wrote on Facebook: “In my brief conversations with him on the kibbutz, I always felt great tranquility and love. Ohad loved sport and especially Roger Federer. He had traveled a lot to watch his matches. He was always very positive. »
Ohad was an athlete, father, husband, fitness freak and, for the past two years, a guitarist.
In April 2022, he posted a video on Facebook in which he could be seen playing the acoustic guitar. He commented: “I always dreamed of playing the guitar. To sit with my children and sing, to uplift the soul. A year ago I decided to buy a guitar and make my dream come true. »
Last week, a video of him singing Yehuda Poliker’s song “Flower” went viral, the words taking on dramatic meaning following the disappearance of the Cohen family: “They took your life.” O holy wars, the angels have cried for you with dry eyes. Your smile, little girl, they buried it in the ground. How silence is born from this agitation. »
