Arsenal Knocked Out of League Cup by West Ham in Round of 16

London Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal has been left without the League Cup. West Ham United, more effectively than anything else, eliminated the ‘Gunners’ (3-1) in the round of 16 and leaves them without the possibility of advancing in the first major title of the season.

With an own goal from Ben White, a good goal from Mohammed Kudus and another from Jarrod Bowne, the ‘Hammers’ get into the quarter-finals and force Arsenal to focus on the other three titles in which they are still alive, the Premier League, the FA Cup – which has not yet started for them – and the Champions League.

And to some extent, Arteta’s team can blame this elimination on bad luck, as the match started on the wrong foot for them, when White cleared Jarred Bowen’s corner into his own goal. A silly goal that forced Arsenal to trail the entire match and that caused the curious scene of West Ham leading at half-time despite not having taken a shot, either on goal or off, in the entire first half.

David Moyes’ men redeemed themselves after the break and with the score in their favor they played with fluidity and calmness until the final score fell. Mohammed Kudus, with excellent control with his left foot and shot with his right hand, made it 2-0 and the third fell to the boots of Bowen, who shot from the front with the outside and after bouncing off a defender it slipped into the face of Aaron Ramsdale, starter ahead of David Raya.

In injury time and with no time left for more, Martin Odegaard, substitute for the second consecutive game, scored the winning goal.

With this defeat, Arsenal will continue for another year without winning the second most important cup in England and they have not won it since the 1992-1993 season. For its part, West Ham awaits a rival in the quarterfinals and aspires to win it for the first time. They have lost two finals, in 1966 and 1981. JS
