Fifty-Second New York Marathon to be Held Amid Middle East Crisis and Heightened Security Measures

The fifty-second edition of the New York marathon, organized on Sunday November 5, will be held in a particular context of crisis in the Middle East. “As tensions rise around the globe, there is growing concern about the impact this will have here,” said Edward Caban, a representative of the New York police force, on Wednesday during a press conference covered by Reuters agency.

According to Caban “there is currently no credible or specific threat to the marathon or to the city”, but authorities nevertheless plan to implement “a comprehensive security plan” for the race. Anti-terrorist teams equipped with heavy weapons will be deployed in the city and the runners will all be checked before the start.

During the 2013 edition, organized a few months after the Boston Marathon attack, but also in 2016, the race had already been surrounded by increased security.
