Motagua’s Struggle Against Saprissa in 2023 Central American Cup Playoffs

San Jose Costa Rica.

Motagua received two lethal blows in less than nine minutes of the start of the match against Saprissa in the second leg of the 2023 Central American Cup playoffs in search of a ticket to the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.

As soon as the game began at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium, the Ciclón Azul received a bucket of cold water in the first minute of play, the Motagüense defense entered the match asleep and started on the left foot in Costa Rican territory.

A cross from Mariano Torres was headed with his back to the goal by Ariel Rodríguez, combing the ball, and defeated the Argentine goalkeeper Jonathan Rougier, who was surprised, conceding the score to 1-0.

In the ninth minute, the Purple Monster made itself felt again with another cross from the right, this time from Fidel Escobar, and which veteran Tico defender Kendall Waston connected with a header to make it 2-0.

It is the worst start that Motagua could have had in Costa Rica, now they are down 4-2 on aggregate and with a Saprissa on top in search of more goals.

Kendall Waston scored Saprissa’s second goal against Motagua and celebrated euphorically.
