(CNN) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern on Wednesday that the Israeli raids on the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza “may amount to war crimes.”
The UNHCR said on social media: “Given the large number of civilian casualties and the scale of destruction that followed the Israeli air strikes on Jabalia refugee camp, we have serious concerns that these are disproportionate attacks that could amount to war crimes.”
The UN statement comes after the Israeli army confirmed that the explosion that occurred in the Fallujah neighborhood of Jabalia refugee camp on Wednesday was due to an air strike, following an air strike on Tuesday.
The two air strikes targeted the Hamas movement, according to the Israeli army, which said in a statement on Wednesday that its planes “bombed a Hamas command and control complex in Jabalia,” adding that “Hamas terrorists were eliminated in the raid.”
