Two health workers socialize about monkey pox. Deputy Head of Commission IX DPR asked to monitor the groups most at risk in cases of monkey pox.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Deputy Chairperson of Commission IX DPR RI Kurniasih Mufidayati hopes that the spread of cases monkey pox or monkeypox is not more contagious. With the increase in the number of confirmed cases, he questioned whether the government’s management and mitigation measures had been implemented properly or not.
“Now the number continues to increase, so someone needs to evaluate whether the management and mitigation have been carried out?” said Kurniasih, quoted from the DPR RI Commission IX page, Thursday (2/11/2023).
Kurniasih said that since this case broke out and has not yet entered Indonesia, he has reminded the government to prepare itself to create procedures for handling monkey pox. The hope is that we won’t be shocked like when we faced Covid-19.
“Before the case came in and when the first case was confirmed, I had repeatedly reminded people about management and mitigation as well as supervision of the most at-risk groups,” he said.
Kurniasih said that Indonesia has experience in handling Covid-19. He hopes that this will enable the handling of infectious diseases to be carried out in a more well-programmed manner.
“Tracing close contacts, isolating confirmed patients, carrying out tests and starting to increase vaccinations. In general, it is the same as the actions we took during Covid-19. We should have been much better prepared. Plus one additional thing is to closely monitor the most at-risk groups,” he explained.
Citing a study from the New England Journal of Medicine on July 21, it revealed 528 confirmed infections between April 27 and June 24 2022, 98 percent of whom were predominantly gay or bisexual men, and 95 percent had contracted the disease through sexual activity.
WHO also issued a statement that men who have sex with men are the group most at risk of infection at this time.
