The TOTO KNVB Cup is a spectacle every year. On the first day of the match it rained goals and surprises. Almere City won by no less than 1-8, NAC was eliminated by Quick Boys and stunt team Spakenburg also managed to reach the next round.

On Wednesday evening the tournament was preparing for ten matches. AFC and HHC Hardenberg pulled off major stunts by eliminating Eredivisie clubs PEC Zwolle and Heracles Almelo.

PEC is surprised by AFC in the final phase

PEC Zwolle visited the AFC amateurs in the first round. The people of Zwolle had the better of the game, but it remained 0-0 for a long time. Fifteen minutes before the end, Johnny Jansen’s team ran into problems, as the home team from Amsterdam took a 1-0 lead. But luckily for PEC the goal was disallowed.

AFC still scored in the 86th minute. Wessel Been, who was cold in the field, exploded Sportpark Goed Genoeg with a striking header from a corner. He only needed a moment to decide the match and thus pull off a stunt against PEC Zwolle.

HHC stunt against Heracles

Earlier in the evening, the second matchday of the cup season started surprisingly HHC took the lead against Heracles. Uruguayan Matias Jones, who played for clubs such as FC Groningen, FC Emmen and SC Cambuur in the past, headed home from a corner in the 35th minute.

In the second half it was up to Heracles to turn it around, but it was HHC that doubled the score. Jesper Drost, who played for Heracles between 2018 and 2020, headed his team into a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute. In 2014, Drost won the cup with PEC Zwolle. Then he and his team pulled off a huge stunt by beating Ajax 5-1 in the final. It remained 2-0 against Heracles.

Groningen difficult past Rijnsburgse Boys

FC Groningen was the victim of a cup stunt last season, when it lost 2-3 at home to Spakenburg. On Wednesday evening, without trainer Dick Lukkien, who did not travel due to pain in his jaw, they had to prevent a surprise from second division team Rijnsburgse Boys. The difference at Sportpark Middelmors was only made in the second half. Marvin Peersman scored the only and therefore winning goal for the Groningers in the 71st minute.

Sparta wins when visiting IJsselmeervogels

On Tuesday there was a party on the blue side of Westmaat due to the victory of Spakenburg, but on Wednesday that was not the case on the red side of IJsselmeer birds. The ‘Reds’ did not manage to win against Sparta Rotterdam. It was a special match for Sparta coach Jeroen Rijsdijk, who enjoyed success as a player at IJsselmeervogels.

Sparta took the lead after 37 minutes of play through Camiel Neghli. A mop ball was too much for IJsselmeervogels goalkeeper Jaimy Schaap, making it 0-1 for the visitors. Shortly before the end of the match, Sparta made it 0-2 through Charles-Andreas Brym and that was also the final score.

Penalty in the final phase allows Fortuna to escape

Fortuna Sittard was warned about the amateurs of Sparta Nijkerk, after enough professional football clubs fell in the first round. Yet it had great difficulty with the third divisionist. After a halftime score of 0-0, that seemed to be the score after ninety minutes. A converted penalty from Alen Halilovic in the final phase only provided a way out for Danny Buijs’ men. Fortuna won a hard-fought victory with the minimum difference.

RKAV Volendam lashes out against VV Eemdijk

RKAV Volendam and VV Eemdijk, numbers eight and six of the Third Division, were allowed to battle it out tonight in the Kras Stadium of FC Volendam. It just wasn’t a fight. The home team was a size too big for Eemdijk and expressed this strongly between the 34th and 39th minute. A few minutes of inattention and Roy Tol, Daan van Baarsen and Jim Beers made it 3-0 at halftime. The Volendam team expanded their lead after the break. Roy Tol, with his second of the evening, and Stefan Plat made it 5-0 in Volendam’s favor.

DEM easily along Hoogeveen

RKVV DEM was clearly too big for VV Hoogeveen in the first round. In the first 45 minutes, the home team from Beverwijk already made it 3-0. Thom de Vries started his tournament well, as the attacker found the net twice within seventeen minutes. De Vries was also important in the first preliminary round by scoring the only goal of the match in extra time against XerxesDZB. Hoogeveen did something back in the second half, but the team did not get further than 3-1, which meant that DEM easily advanced in the cup.

Katwijk leaves nothing intact from TEC

Katwijk had a relaxing evening on its own field in the cup against the TEC of coaching duo Eric Meijers and Hans van de Haar. After half an hour of play, the team took a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals from Finn Janmaat. In the second half Katwijk moved further away.

Ruben Doesburg actually closed the match in the 63rd minute. Moments later, things got even worse for TEC due to an own goal by captain Pele van Anholt, who played 166 matches in the Eredivisie in his professional career and played for LA Galaxy, among others. The match eventually ended 5-0. Rick van der Meer determined the final score with a beautiful free kick.

Hercules too strong for Scheveningen after penalties

Second divisionist SVV Scheveningen was the favorite in the match with USV Hercules, but that changed after an hour. Ruben Koorndijk had to leave the field with a red card and Hercules, who plays at a lower level, smelled blood. Despite a lot of pressure from the visitors, Scheveningen managed to force an extension. But even after 120 minutes it remained goalless and so penalties were necessary. After the penalties, Hercules ultimately emerged as the winner.

Excelsior wins despite Den Bosch’s late equalizer

Excelsior came to visit De Vliert Stadium. The Rotterdam line-up showed that Excelsior takes the KNVB Cup Tournament series, sparing players was hardly done. As a result, it hardly encountered any problems against FC Den Bosch. Siebe Horemans gave the Eredivisie team the lead in the 37th minute and that seemed to be the decision. Den Bosch almost didn’t get in front of the goal, but in the very last minute they came alongside thanks to a flicker box goal. In extra time, Excelsior got what it was entitled to. A penalty from Julian Baas ensured that we saw Excelsior’s ball again in the draw for the second round of the TOTO KNVB Cup.
