French Archaeologist Safely Leaves Gaza Strip Amidst Hamas Attacks

For the first time since the start of Hamas attacks on Israeli soil and the establishment of a total siege around the Gaza Strip, dozens of people were able to leave the Palestinian enclave this Wednesday, November 1. Initially, foreigners and dual nationals were able to reach Egypt via Rafah. Among them, at least five French people including René Elter, archaeologist from Première Urgence Internationale.

“The news is still very limited, he is still at the border post. We are already pleased with his release and he is now 100% safe,” confides Olivier Routeau, director of operations at Première Urgence Internationale, guest on RTL. “We were unable to have direct contact with him, only with the convoy leader. But we can confirm to his family that he is well and that is excellent news,” he continues.

“He is doing well physically. Obviously, he is tested by this sequence, but physically, he is in good health,” explains Olivier Routeau. “We were able to organize an office, secure it and find working conditions to organize the first emergency response operations in particular. René had joined our team and everything was brought together. The organization of this convoy was therefore done in a timely manner. calm.”
