“In light of recent legal guidance and notices, OFAC WalletConnect has limited the availability of the protocol in Russia,” the project’s X-account states.
The decision came into force on Monday, October 30, and affected some regions of Ukraine. Service has since been restored, according to the report.
Back in October 2021, OFAC issued instructions for representatives of the cryptocurrency industry regarding their compliance with the sanctions regime. The document recommended using “geolocation tools” to identify and block IP addresses from restricted jurisdictions.
WalletConnect CEO Pedro Gomes explained in a notice to users that the situation with Ukraine was related to the need to disable IP addresses from restricted regions.
“There have been some incorrect reports that we have blocked other countries that were not sanctioned. We can confirm that no other jurisdictions were affected,” Gomes stressed.
Users in the comments doubted, that there are direct instructions from OFAC regarding protocols like WalletConnect, which actually serve to transmit messages. The project solution is also named not in keeping with the spirit of decentralization.
“Very creepy. It looks like you’re not entirely into Web3. Rest in peace,” wrote the founder of KKTeam under the nickname Krakovia.

Let us remind you that the media found out that the Russians are using crypto firms in Estonia and Lithuania to circumvent sanctions. For the same purpose, citizens of the Russian Federation buy verified accounts of the European service Wirex.
