Vigorous aerobic physical activity for 45 minutes three times a week may reduce the risk of cancer in patients with Lynch syndrome, according to a study published in Clinical Cancer Research. The level of physical activity investigated increased the effectiveness of the immune system to remove malignant cells.
Although associations between physical activity and decreased cancer risk have previously been found, this is the first study to identify changes in immunological biomarkers as a function of physical activity. Also, compared to previous studies, an intense level of physical activity was analyzed and more colonic tissue samples were collected, thus making it easier to highlight the changes that occur in people who do sports.
The main conclusions:
in people who completed the physical exercise program, there was an increase in the activity of natural killer (NK) immune cells and CD8+ lymphocytes, which are involved in the elimination of malignant cells, physical activity was associated with a reduction in the level of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which is a marker of inflammation Photo source: Pixabay
Lynch syndrome is a genetic condition, and patients with this disease can develop neoplasms from a young age, including colorectal or endometrial cancers. The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 60%. Conformable American Cancer Societylifestyle factors are responsible for more than 15% of cancer deaths in the United States, recommending a level of 150-300 minutes of moderate or vigorous-intensity exercise to lower cancer risk.
The study included 21 participants, all diagnosed with Lynch syndrome. They were divided into two groups, one who followed an aerobic exercise program similar to indoor cycling for 12 months, and the others who received strict standard care for patients with Lynch syndrome. Study participants were assessed both cardiac and respiratory.
NK cells and CD8+ T lymphocytes were determined from both blood and colonic samples. Spatial gene expression and transcriptomic profile analysis was performed using colon biopsy samples, and the results were confirmed by immunohistochemistry.
