FC Bayern Munich only plays against European opponents, Borussia Dortmund only plays against clubs from Germany – an absurd idea in football. It is reality in American football in Germany. Different representatives play in the German Football League (GFL) than in the European Football League (ELF). The ELF was only founded at the end of 2020, while the GFL has been around since 1979. The teams from both leagues do not meet on the field.
17 teams from nine countries play in the ELF, seven teams come from Germany. The title holders Rhein Fire from Düsseldorf, Berlin Thunder and Frankfurt Galaxy are there. These teams do not appear in the German league. The 15 participants include the top teams Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Potsdam Royals and the Berlin Adler. Teams from different leagues in Berlin and Munich, among others, compete for fans as well as players and sponsors.
