Tropical Storm Pilar Threatens El Salvador and Mexico

Sofia Barruti

(CNN Spanish) – Tropical Storm Pilar is off the coast of El Salvador this Tuesday and rain, winds and waves are expected for that area, including some states of Mexico, according to the Mexican National Meteorological Service (SMN).

Due to their location, countries such as Guatemala and El Salvador are also affected by this storm.

In that sense, it was the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador itself that declared a national emergency due to the risk of flooding and landslides that tropical storm Pilar could cause.

Until warning number 20 issued by the SMN this Tuesday morning, Tropical Storm Pilar was 290 kilometers south-southwest of San Salvador, El Salvador, and 445 km southeast of the mouth of the Suchiate River (border between Mexico and Guatemala).

Pilar has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h with gusts of up to 100 km/h.

The storm could be near the coast of El Salvador this Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, although it is not expected to make landfall at this time as the center of the system is forecast to remain offshore.

Affectations in Mexico

In Mexico, where cold front Number 8 occurs, Pilar is expected to produce rain, strong winds and high waves in the southeast of the country, according to the SMN.

Specifically, according to SMN notice 20, these conditions are expected:

Occasional torrential rains: from 150 to 250 millimeters in 24 hours in Chiapas and Oaxaca. Winds with gusts of 110 to 130 km/h and waves of 4 to 6 meters high in the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

The aforementioned rainfall, which will be with electric shocks, could generate landslides, an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, as well as overflows and floods in areas of the mentioned states, so the population, tourists and maritime navigation are urged to to heed the warnings of the SMN, to follow the recommendations of Civil Protection, and to take extreme precautions against rain, wind and high waves.
