Adata has announced the release of an external solid-state drive with USB4 support. The manufacturer announced a new product with the simple name SE920 back in 2021 and showed it at Computex 2023 in early summer of this year. The release of the device was delayed, but during this time the company managed to further “pump up” its characteristics.
Initially, Adata announced a read speed of 3800 MB/s and a write speed of 3200 MB/s for the external SSD SE920, which is already higher than the capabilities of almost all other external SSDs from other manufacturers. However, before the release of the drive, the company further increased its write speed – up to 3700 MB/s. Now you can transfer a 10 GB video file in 4K resolution to the new product in about three seconds.
The Adata SSD SE920 external drive supports USB4, Thunderbolt 3 and 4 interfaces, and is also backward compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0. To connect, the device uses the usual USB Type-C connector. USB4 support allows transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, but this inevitably leads to heating of components, which can affect performance. To solve this problem, Adata equipped the SE920 with a small cooling fan. The manufacturer claims that in comparison with drives of similar characteristics, but with a passive cooling system, the active cooling system of the SE920 is 10% more efficient and allows maintaining a constant data transfer rate. To start the fan, the SSD must be “opened”. For this purpose, it is equipped with a telescopic body with perforation on the inside.
In addition to the flagship SE920 USB4 external SSD, Adata has also launched the SD620 and SC610 external SSDs. The former is MIL-STD certified for protection against drops up to 1.22 meters, and also has vibration protection. The second drive is characterized by the compact form factor of a regular USB flash drive, which has the characteristics of an external SSD. For the SD620, the manufacturer claims a data transfer speed of up to 520 MB/s, and for the SC610 a read speed of 550 MB/s and a write speed of 500 MB/s are indicated.
All three drives are already available for sale. The manufacturer did not specify the cost of the new products.
