Scania 420 R Truck Dominates Fuel Consumption Segment in European Truck Challenge

The Scania 420 R truck with the internal combustion powertrain introduced in 2021 won a decisive victory in the fuel consumption segment in the famous German long-distance truck comparison test “European Truck Challenge”.

The difference in average diesel fuel consumption with the second place winner in the test is 4.9%, which in a comparative test of vehicles of this level determines a significant difference between competitors. The victory in the test was determined by the remarkable internal combustion powertrain and the recently renewed cruise control, endowed with an active predictive function

“This is further proof that Scania is the leading brand in the industry offering the most efficient fuel economy,” says Julian Modro, Scania Trucks Industry Solutions Manager. “Such tests by independent journalists confirm what thousands of customers experience every day: our Super trucks are clearly superior to the competition in terms of fuel consumption and deliver significant reductions in CO2 emissions.”

The Scania Super truck has once again won an award-winning place in the comparison test, proving itself as the leading vehicle in the industry and a leader in fuel efficiency. In a benchmark test organized by industry magazine Truck & Trailer Welt, it beat the runner-up with a 4.9% lower overall fuel consumption figure.

This year, the “European Truck Challenge” comparative test mainly tested long-distance trucks with power up to 450 hp and torques between 2,200 and 2,400 Nm. All the major European car manufacturers were invited to participate in the test organized by Germany, which took place at the end of May on the roads south of Hanover. However, as a result, three brands put their trucks on the starting line: Scania, DAF and Mercedes. Scania applied for 420 R sleeper trucks. Despite having the lowest horsepower, the Scania had the highest torque at 2,300 Nm. The average gross weight of the truck and trailer combinations used in the test was 33.6 tonnes.

“Truck and Trailer Welt organizes the European Truck Challenge on public roads using different road specifications,” explains Julian Modro, Scania Trucks Industry Solutions Manager. “Their test mimics what trucking customers experience on a daily basis, but the only difference is that distractions like traffic congestion are removed from the final results for comparability. What this level of fuel savings means for carriers struggling with rising fuel costs and the increase in interest rates is obvious: for a truck that covers 150,000 km a year, the fuel cost savings compared to the second best truck is about 3,000 euros.”

At an award ceremony held in conjunction with NUFAM in Karlsruhe, Germany, Truck and Trailer Welt awarded Scania the most economical truck title and award. Dutch truck manufacturer DAF received the “Driver’s Choice” award for its XF 450 truck.
