Samsung Portable SSD T9: Performance, Design, and Price/Quality Ratio

We tested the Samsung Portable SSD T9, a small, robust external drive with speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s and capacities of up to 4 TB. What about performance, usage and price/quality ratio?

The Samsung Portable SSD T9 is marketed as a portable data storage solution in capacities of 1 TB (€ 133,-), 2 TB (€ 219,-) and 4 TB (€ 414,-) and USB 3.2 Gen. 2 2×2 speeds up to 2 GB/s, when connected to a suitable computer. In ideal conditions, you can write 1 TB of data in less than nine minutes.

Design and portability

The Samsung Portable SSD T9 has a compact design, making it easy to carry. Nevertheless, this SSD is clearly somewhat larger and heavier than the previously tested Crucial Portable SSD X10 Pro, which offers comparable performance (42 g for the Crucial X10 Pro compared to 122 g for the Samsung T9).

The aluminum of the T9 is covered by a sturdy layer of black rubber. Not only does it provide a lot of grip, but the housing has also been tested against a fall of three meters. That gives this portable SSD a certain degree of robustness, although no official IP value is mentioned in the specs. Samsung does provide a five-year warranty on this product.

The outside of the T9 never gets warmer than 60°C. This SSD therefore complies with the IEC 62368-1 safety standard for ‘low temperature burn’. So you can never get burned by handling this SSD when it is being written to very intensively.

Optimization for video

Thanks to the TurboWrite Cache, this SSD is able to maintain the maximum transfer speed long enough so that 8K or 12K HD video cameras can also write directly to the disk without losing video frames. You can configure this cache and possibly also disable it using Samsung Magiciansoftware for Windows, Mac and Android.

The cache size is 22 GB for the 1 TB, 88 GB for the 2 TB and 180 GB for the 4 TB variants. To give an idea: 180 GB is enough to store eight hours of Netflix video (HEVC codec at 4K@60 fps).

Security features

Hardware AES encryption is built-in, but to activate it you need separate software, in contrast to the older, previously tested, half as fast Samsung Portable SSD T7 Touch with built-in fingerprint sensor. By the way, it is still available.

The Samsung Portable SSD Software you need for this is already on the exFAT-formatted drive. The software is available for Windows, Mac and Android. By the way, it is the same software that also works with the aforementioned Portable SSD T7. The operation is the same, minus the fingerprint sensor.

Encryption also works with BitLocker Drive Encryption for Windows Enterprise, but you must set this up via the aforementioned Samsung Magician software, which is also used to perform a possible firmware update or to install this SSD in a secure manner. erase (‘Secure Erase’).

Performance

We tested the 1TB versions of the Samsung Portable SSD T9. The throughput speeds we measured are very close to the speeds specified by Samsung, if you test in the same way.

The hardware AES-256 encryption enabled or disabled does not cause significant speed differences.

We didn’t have a 20 Gbit/s USB 3.2 Gen.2 2×2 system available like one of the recent Macs with Thunderbolt/USB-C port or PC expansion card like the GIGABYTE GC-USB 3.2 GEN2X2 PCIe.

On a 10 GBit/s USB 3.2 Gen.2 laptop, the Portable SSD T9 achieves a sequential bandwidth between 617 MB/s and 650 MB/s and random bandwidth between 3,523 and 6,252 IOPS in our benchmarks, which are slightly more realistic. applications used.

In the UL Futuremark PC Mark 10 Data Drive benchmark, the T9 achieves an overall bandwidth of 162 MB/s (1057 score, 152 millisecond average access speed).

Conclusion
The Samsung Portable SSD T9 has a slim design, significant storage capacity and decent performance. While the security features, ruggedness and ease of use are strong points, the price point may deter budget-conscious buyers, especially given the availability of cheaper alternatives on the market.
