Car manufacturer General Motors has reached an agreement with the American union United Auto Workers (UAW). It is the third and final major automaker with which the union has reached an agreement.
Union members demanded better compensation and laid off work for weeks at car manufacturers Stellantis, Ford and General Motors. The union previously reached an agreement with the first two companies. With the agreement with General Motors, all strikes are immediately over.
General Motors was under extra pressure to also reach an agreement because Ford and Stellantis had already resumed production due to their agreements with UAW.
25 percent
The deal with General Motors, which has yet to be voted on by union members, is similar to the deals with the other two manufacturers. Wages will increase by 25 percent and retirees will be paid an extra $2,500 (2,355 euros) in five installments.
The wage increase is considerably lower than the union’s demand. He wanted the salaries of union members to increase by 40 percent because the incomes of the top companies had also increased by that figure.
The UAW union represents nearly 150,000 auto industry workers. About 13 percent of members took part in the strike. US President Biden, among others, supported the actions.
