Monday’s match against Sirius was Martí Cifuente’s last as coach for Bajen. Hammarby and Queens Park Rangers FC have reached an agreement for him to take over the London club with immediate effect. It is also clear that assistant coach Xavi Calm will leave Cifuente’s company and he will also leave Hammarby.
Martí Cifuentes thus changes Hammarby IF and the Allsvenskan for Queens Park Rangers FC and the English Championship.
– I want to thank the whole club, the staff, the players and the supporters for their support in this chapter which is now coming to an end. I have decided to take on a new challenge, but I leave proud to have been part of this great club, and with the satisfaction that thanks to the commitment and hard work of everyone, we have been able to enjoy many good moments, and also help Hammarby grow gradually, as we planned when I was appointed. I am absolutely sure that the club will continue to go in this direction and I wish everyone every success, says Martí.
Two matches remain in the Allsvenskan season, but Hammarby chooses after negotiations with QPR to release their head coach immediately.
– Hammarby has on several different occasions received offers from clubs regarding Martí Cifuentes, where both club and coach chose to decline. Now we choose to accept offers from Queens Park Rangers FC and thus leave Martí Cifuentes and Xavi Calm with immediate effect, says CEO Richard von Yxkull and continues:
– Martí has been a highly valued leader and coach, who with his high level of ambition and professionalism has developed the club forward. He and Xavi will be missed both on and off the pitch and we wish them the best of luck in their continued careers.
The recruitment of a new head coach for the club has already begun. The solution to lead the team in the final games of the season this year will be found internally. Exact people and areas of responsibility will be communicated shortly from the club.
– We have a clear picture of how we will shape the management of the team for the rest of the season, but we need to put the last details before we can go out with it. The process of appointing a new, permanent head coach is already underway. Having said that, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Martí and Xavi for the professional work they have done for Hammarby. Their work ethic, thoroughness, knowledge and commitment has been amazing. We wish both Martí and Xavi the best of luck, says Mikael Hjelmberg, sports director at Hammarby Fotboll.
The recruitment of a new head coach is formally led by Hammarby’s board, whose goal is to have a new name in place by the time the 2024 pre-season begins.
– We have been prepared for a situation like this to arise and we are now working to bring in the best imaginable names that can take Hammarby to the next level. We are of course carrying out this process thoroughly and the goal is to have a new coach in place by the time the pre-season starts after the turn of the year, says Mattias Fri, chairman of Hammarby Fotboll.
Martí Cifuentes came to Hammarby before last year’s season and in his first year took Hammarby to the cup final and a third place in the Allsvenskan. Thus, his stay at the club was barely two seasons long.
Many thanks for your time in Hammarby, Martí!
