The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has released Census 2022 data, which shows that 12% of the total Irish population was foreign-born in April last year, a percentage increase of 1% since the previous Census in 2016. %, reports the “Baltic Ireland” portal.
CSO figures show that there were 631,785 non-citizens living in Ireland at the time of the last Census.
Among them were 18,300 Latvian citizens, including 8,067 men and 10,233 women.
In terms of numbers, the community of Latvian nationals ranked eighth after the communities of Poland (9368), United Kingdom (83347), India (45449), Romania (43323), Lithuania (31177), Brazil (27338) and Italy (18319). In April last year, 2,418 people with Irish and Latvian citizenship lived in the country.
The average age of Latvian citizens living in Ireland was 36.3 years. Comparatively, the average age of the entire population of this country was 38.9 years.
In the census questionnaire, 15,349 respondents stated that Latvian is the language spoken at home, of which 10,811 have Latvian citizenship, 4,206 have Irish citizenship, and 291 have or have no citizenship of other countries. On the other hand, 3,430 Latvian citizens indicated that they speak Russian at home. Of all those who speak Latvian at home, 7,234 indicate that they know English very well, 5,313 – well, 2,081 – poorly, 284 – do not speak at all, while 437 did not indicate their level of English skills
In the year before the Census, 454 Latvian citizens came to live in Ireland. By comparison, the largest ethnic group to choose Ireland as a place to live and work this year was 10,593 Indian nationals.
This is the fifth of eight thematic data series providing detailed results for specific areas of the 2022 Census. It looks at the diversity of Ireland’s population, including nationality, ethnic group or origin, and the languages spoken by the population.
