Why is the Moon Sometimes Visible During the Day?

TECHNO ROOM — Looking at the moon in the night sky is probably normal. But why is the moon sometimes visible during the day?

The moon is sometimes visible during the day for the same reason we see it at night, namely because it reflects light from the sun. However, its proximity to Earth makes it brighter than the day or night sky.

As quoted from LiveScienceAfter the sun, the moon is the brightest celestial object that we can see.

However, the moon is not always visible during the day. This is caused by the Earth’s atmosphere and the orbital cycles of our natural satellites.

If our planet had no atmosphere, the moon would be visible from Earth all the time.

Meanwhile, lunar phases mean that when the moon is between Earth and the sun — such as during the new moon phase — the illuminated side faces away from us and the dark side of the moon faces Earth, making it practically invisible to observers on Earth.

Light Scattered in Earth’s Atmosphere

Gas particles in our atmosphere — especially nitrogen and oxygen — scatter light that has short wavelengths, such as blue and violet light.

The cause of this scattering of light, which involves the absorption and re-emission of light in different directions, makes Earth’s sky blue.

To be visible during the day, the moon must overcome the scattered light from the sun, Edward Guinan, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, told Live Science.

For the two or three days around the new moon phase, the moon is invisible to observers on Earth, because its position in the sky makes the scattered light from the sun brighter than the moon.

However, as usual, the moon’s relative proximity to Earth (an average of 384,400 kilometers) makes the light it reflects appear brighter to us compared to light-emitting or reflecting objects that are farther away, such as stars or other planets.

According to Guinan, the stars visible from Earth are a million billion times brighter than the light of the sun, and a million times fainter than the light of the moon.

The scattered light from the sun is so bright in our sky that it often outshines the light of the stars during the day, but not always the light reflected by the moon.
