Disney+ presents the first trailer and poster for ‘Cristóbal Balenciaga’, a dramatic series inspired by the life and legacy of the Spanish creator born in Guetaria, one of the most iconic fashion designers of all time.
Created by Lourdes Iglesias alongside Aitor Arregi, Jon Garao, and Jose Mari Goenaga, Alberto San Juan has been tasked with portraying the main protagonist: an enigmatic man with extraordinary talent who defied the social conventions of the time and revolutionized the world of fashion.
‘Cristóbal Balenciaga’ begins when the designer presents his first haute couture collection in Paris in 1937. Behind him lies a successful career in his workshops in Madrid and San Sebastian, dressing the Spanish elite and aristocracy. However, the designs that set trends in Spain fail to resonate in the sophisticated fashion empire that Paris has become, where Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy are the reference for haute couture. Guided by his obsession with control in all aspects of his life, Cristóbal Balenciaga will define his style and become one of the most important designers of all time.
San Juan is accompanied by an international cast of actors who bring to life renowned characters from the 20th century that were fundamental in the Master’s life. Among them, Belén Cuesta (Fabiola de Mora y Aragón); Josean Bengoetxea (the businessman from San Sebastian, Nicolás Bizkarrondo); Cecilia Solaguren (his wife, Virgilia Mendizabal); Adam Quintero (Ramón Esparza and collaborator of the designer); Thomas Coumans (Wladzio D’Attainville, partner and associate of Cristóbal Balenciaga); Gemma Whelan (Prudence Glynn, journalist from The Times); Anouk Grinberg (Coco Chanel); Gabrielle Lazure (Carmel Snow, fashion director of Harper’s Bazaar); Patrice Thibaud (Christian Dior); Nine d’Urso (model Colette); and Anna-Victoire Olivier (actress Audrey Hepburn).
The technical team includes names such as composer Alberto Iglesias, winner of 11 Goya Awards (nominated 19 times for the award), and four-time Oscar nominee, three-time BAFTA nominee, and two-time Golden Globe nominee; Bina Daigeler, Oscar nominee for the live-action film ‘Mulan’ by The Walt Disney Studios and Emmy nominee for the costume design of ‘Mrs. America’, is the costume director alongside costume designer Pepo Ruiz Dorado; Javier Agirre Erauso (Goya winner for ‘Handia’) is the director of photography; Mikel Serrano (Goya winner for ‘Handia’ and ‘Akelarre’) is the art director; Karmele Soler, winner of a Goya Award for ‘The Skin I Live In’, is the makeup artist.
‘Cristóbal Balenciaga’ is a production by Xabier Berzosa through Moriarti Produkzioak and Irusoin, which will premiere on Disney+ on January 19, 2024, with one episode per week. Below, you can find both its first trailer and poster.
