How to Prevent Stroke at a Young Age: Lifestyle Factors and Treatment Options

JawaPos.com-Neurology specialist at RSUPN Cipto Mangunkusumo Dr. Dr. Rakhmad Hidayat, Sp.S(K), MARS, said that the habit of staying up late and not exercising at all is a lifestyle factor that can increase the risk factor for stroke at a young age.

“The trend now is that many people are in their 30s because of people’s habit of staying up late, working (until) without sleeping, sometimes not exercising at all,” said Rakhmad in an online discussion about the signs and symptoms of stroke, which was attended in Jakarta, Monday.

Risk factors for stroke such as lifestyle, according to Rakhmad, can actually be prevented, however, these factors often cause strokes at a young age. The lifestyle in question includes lack of exercise, irregular eating, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.

Rakhmad said age and gender were risk factors that could not be avoided. Most strokes occur in men over 45 years of age, while in women over 55 years of age.

Even though they cannot be changed, these risk factors can be corrected so that the possibility of a stroke is reduced and a person can live as healthy as an ordinary person.

“If it has been repaired then the chances will be small that he will live like an ordinary person, healthy, thin body, no hypertension, no diabetes, that’s our target,” said Rakhmad.

The doctor who completed a doctoral program at the University of Indonesia said a stroke could happen at any time without any early signs. There are two causes of stroke, namely blockage from cholesterol plaque which blocks blood vessels to the brain, spine and eyes; and rupture of blood vessels due to erosion of weak blood vessels.

Smoking and obesity are risk factors that contribute a major role in every disease, including stroke. A person is categorized as obese if they have a stomach circumference of more than 102 centimeters for men and 92 centimeters for women.

Risk factors also include genetics that are exacerbated by an unhealthy lifestyle.

Stroke healing, said Rakhmad, must be carried out within 4.5 – 6 hours when the attack occurs and the patient must be immediately rushed to the hospital to be given blood clot-thinning medication.

“It’s valid for six hours, beyond that the improvements are not very good,” said Rakhmad.

Rakhmad explained that patients need to be taken to hospital immediately to avoid disability and death. If the first stage of treatment is successful, the doctor will advise the patient to correct risk factors such as lifestyle and take physiotherapy to avoid disability and for the body to function normally.
