Norwegian booksellers have spoken: Here are the ten books that have been nominated for the Booksellers Prize 2023.
Norwegian bookshop employees across the country have voted for their 10 Norwegian book favorites from the past year – among 150 titles.
See the list of the 10 nominees for the Booksellers Award further down in the issue.
Among what the booksellers believe are the best books of the year, we find both the 19-year-old newcomer Oliver Lovrenski and the seasoned best-selling author Lars Mytting – who in recent weeks has been fighting for first place on the Norwegian book list.
Lovrenski is the youngest ever nominated for the award for his debut novel “When we were younger”, says director Anne Schiøtz of the Booksellers’ Association.

There is also a regular on the list: Tore Renberg has been nominated for the award for the 7th time – and that means that he is the author who has been nominated the most times for the award.
– It is even between many of the nominees this year, so it is extra exciting to follow who walks away with the victory! The winner will be chosen on 14 November, says Schiøtz in a press release.
Five of the nominees have received a roll of 6 in VG: Oliver Lovrenski, Vigdis Hjorth, Lars Mytting, Tore Renberg – and Maria Parr for the children’s book “Oskar og eg”.
Last year, the prize went to Zeshan Shakar’s “They call me the wolf”.

About the Bookhandler Prize
The Booksellers Prize is awarded after a vote among all who work in Norwegian bookshops. The book voted on must be one of the year’s books and by a Norwegian author within fiction/general literature, also children’s and youth books.
The Booksellers Prize is a bronze statuette: “Thank you for the book”, made by sculptor Nils Aas.
The Booksellers Prize was awarded for the first time in 1948. Then it was called “Thank you for the book” and the prize was awarded to Sigurd Hoel. When the tradition was resumed in 1981, after a twelve-year hiatus, it was named the “Bookseller Prize”.
In 1998, the rules were changed so that the Booksellers Prize can also be awarded to authors who have received the prize previously, and from 2008 nominations for the Bookseller Prize began.
This year, the prize will be awarded on 14 November.
