FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA — TNI Commander Admiral Yudo Margono will immediately end his term of office after entering retirement on November 26 2023. To replace the TNI Commander, President Jokowi has reportedly sent his name to the DPR RI.
Jokowi confirmed the nomination of a candidate for TNI Commander in Chief, Meutya Hafid, by the Chairman of Commission I DPR RI. He admitted that he had received the presidential letter (surpres) in order to replace Admiral Yudo Margono as TNI Commander.
“It has been accepted,” said Meutya Hafid in Jakarta, Monday (30/10).
When asked who Jokowi’s proposed candidate for TNI Commander in Chief was, Meutya kept it a secret. He said that the name would be announced directly by the Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani.
“The name will be conveyed by the Speaker of the DPR, but it will definitely be a single candidate, because according to the law the president sends a single (proposed) candidate,” said Meutya Hafid.
He added that Commission I DPR RI would have an internal meeting on Tuesday (31/10) to discuss the date of the fit and proper test for the sole candidate for TNI Commander in Chief.
Even though the name of the candidate has not been officially announced, information circulating by the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (Kasad), General TNI Agus Subiyanto, is strongly suspected to be the name proposed by Jokowi.
TNI Commander Admiral TNI Yudo Margono, who officially took office as Commander in December 2022, will retire on November 26 2023 or when he is exactly 58 years old.
Article 53 of Law Number 34 concerning the Indonesian National Army (UU TNI) regulates that TNI officers retire at the age of 58 years, while non-commissioned officers and enlisted officers are 53 years old.
