Samsung once again highlights the capabilities of 200Mpx sensors
The new ISOCELL Zoom Anyplace technology brings news in the field of lossless zoom
We will probably see all the introduced news in the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone
Samsung recently published a blog post highlighting the capabilities of its 200Mpx ISOCELL HP2 and HP3 photo sensors, especially in the area of lossless zoom. Now the Korean company returns to this topic again and adds more examples of what its photo chips can do in combination with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and artificial intelligence. In this way, Samsung is indirectly preparing us for the arrival of the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone, even if its name is in the post on the Samsung website it didn’t sound anywhere.
Lossless zoom from the primary sensor
Will dedicated telephoto lenses disappear from future smartphones? Possible. At the very least, cameras with 2-4x zoom are slowly starting to be frowned upon, as they can apparently replace high-resolution sensors. Periscope cameras do not have to worry about their future just yet.
When Apple unveiled the new iPhones last month, it boasted that the top-of-the-range “Pro” models offered the equivalent of seven professional lenses, despite only physically having three cameras. The basic 48 Mpx sensor itself replaces four cameras with focal lengths of 24, 28, 35 and 48 mm – thus covering a double zoom without the need for a separate telephoto lens.
Samsung goes even further with its 200Mpx sensors – it claims that thanks to their high resolution, it is possible to zoom up to 4x without losing quality or changing the angle. But the magic doesn’t end there – thanks to the recently introduced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and its AI engine, the Korean company can squeeze much more out of its photo chip.
Two videos from one camera at the same time
Samsung introduced a technology called ISOCELL Zoom Anyplace, which can use the lossless zoom of 200Mpx sensors in several scenarios. One of them is the ability of the photo application with the help of artificial intelligence to track a moving object and keep it in the center of the zoomed-in shot. In addition, the videos shot in this way should be perfectly stabilized.
ISOCELL Zoom Anyplace technology – object tracking
Another ability of Zoom Anyplace is the ability to record a double image – both the entire field of view and zoomed-in areas can be captured at the same time, both in 4K resolution. In addition, the zoomed-in image is not just a simple digital cutout, Samsung claims that thanks to Tetra Pixel technology, each recorded image is reconstructed with the help of artificial intelligence to preserve its maximum quality at 12.5 Mpx resolution.
First time in Galaxy S24 Ultra?
We are likely to see the ISOCELL Zoom Anyspace feature set in the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone. It is the only one of the entire Galaxy S24 series to have both a 200MP camera and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset – the other models sold in Europe are powered by the Exynos 2400 chipset.
It has been speculated for a long time that Samsung could gradually reduce the number of physical cameras in its flagship models. Previously, we thought that multiple zoom levels would be solved by a periscope camera with variable focus, but now it seems a more likely scenario where the short focal points will be covered by the main 200Mpx sensor, and the long focal points will be covered by the periscopic telephoto lens.
