Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The match between Marseille and its counterpart Lyon, which was scheduled to take place at the former’s stadium, on Sunday evening, as part of the tenth round of the French League, was cancelled.
The decision to cancel was due to the attack on the Lyon FC bus on its way to the Velodrome stadium and the injury of the team’s technical director, Fabio Grosso, as it appeared that he was injured in the head before receiving medical treatment.
The French League said in an official statement: “During a meeting following the events that took place outside the Velodrome stadium during the Lyon FC bus trip, the latter announced that it was against holding the match in these circumstances,” according to the “Euro Sport” website.
The League added: “In consultation with FC Marseille and the public authorities, the match will not be played, and the League Competitions Committee will decide the next steps to be taken in line with the relevant article of the regulations.”
Meanwhile, Marseille club said in a statement: “The club regrets the unacceptable incidents that occurred around the Stade Velodrome, against the Lyon FC bus, its coach and its fans.”
The club continued: “The club wishes a speedy recovery to Lyon coach Fabio Grosso, and strongly condemns this violent behavior that has no place in the world of football and in society.”
For its part, Lyon Club condemned this attack, saying: “The club regrets that such situations happen every year in Marseille, and calls on the authorities to take such incidents and their repetition into consideration before a more serious tragedy occurs.”
