Stormy Depression Brewing in New Aquitaine: Météo-France Issues Orange Vigilance Alert

Météo-France is alerting again. A stormy depression is brewing for November 1st. It should affect New Aquitaine. It will be followed by other depressions in the following days. Orange Vigilance in Gironde and Landes and yellow in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques continues this weekend.

We have a fairly disturbed westerly current which has been maintained for a few weeks now, following a period of very dry weather, so it is all the more remarkable. notes Simon Rebouissoux, forecasting engineer at Météo-France Bordeaux who distinguishes among “thiss disturbances that parade”, the one which is announced from Wednesday 1ᵉʳ to Thursday 2 November. A “depression, even storm which will arrive during the night from Wednesday to Thursday” for which we plan “heavy precipitation and especially strong winds“.

The entire Atlantic coast is concerned, even if “the most impacted area will likely be Brittany.” We will have stronger winds than what we have just experienced.
“In New Aquitaine, on the Charentaise coasts for example, gusts should exceed 100 km/h. We will also have a lot of wind in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, on the relief and, by surge, in the valleys. And Poitou should be very concerned. This is the area (in New Aquitaine, editor’s note”), where the wind should blow the strongest. The rest of the region should be a little less concerned
“.

On the maritime side, it is not yet calm. “We are going to have a strong swell, quite a few waves. We will remain attentive to the level of marine submersions even if we have tidal coefficients which drop compared to what we have experienced in recent days.“.

Unfortunately, following this stormy episode, the forecaster does not seem to have any new prospects for calmer weather. “We will still have strong winds all day Thursday and then again a parade of depressions which could bring their share of strong winds and precipitation… It’s not over!”
This new bout of tobacco has been called a storm Ciaran by the Anglo-Saxon weather services this Sunday October 29, 2023.

Météo-France specifies in its bulletin that the weather remains disturbed in connection with the Céline depression located on the British Isles. “The associated strong southwest winds generate and maintain strong waves across the entire Atlantic coast and the entrance to the English Channel in a context of high tides requiring particular vigilance“. We will have to count on stormy showers on Sunday like Monday.

On the estuaries of the Atlantic coast, overflows are expected, due to the heavy rains of recent days combined with the high tidal coefficients of 104 this Sunday, 102 and 99 Monday. Charente-Maritime is still subject to orange flood vigilance, as are Gironde, Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. These four departments will remain on orange flood alert on Monday, specifies Météo-France. Finally, vigilance is still yellow in Charente, Gironde, Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques, but orange in Vendée for risks of waves-submersion.
