The Ballon d’Or winner will be announced on Monday (October 30). Pep Guardiola raved before the award Erling Haaland – and named the striker as one of his two favorites for the Ballon d’Or.
With Karim Benzema (2022) and Luka Modrich (2018), there have only been two Ballon d’Or winners in the past 15 years who were not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. This year too, Pep Guardiola sees Messi as one of the big favorites for the award. Of course, this is mainly due to winning the World Cup.
“If Messi wins, it would be a fair victory because of the World Cup,” Guardiola revealed on Sunday. In general, the Spaniard has two favorites: Messi and Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian moved to Manchester City in 2022 and has been putting up stunning numbers ever since. In 68 competitive games for the Sky Blues so far, Haaland has scored 65 goals and also prepared twelve goals.
The Ballon d’Or for Haaland would definitely be deserved, after all Man City won the treble in the summer thanks to the Norwegian’s goals. Guardiola is torn: “I’ve always said that the Ballon d’Or should be awarded in two parts, one for Messi and one for the other, so Haaland should win, yes,” Pep continued.
The Ballon d’Or winner will be announced on Monday in Paris. World champion Aitana Bonmati is the big favorite among women.
