MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed its first meet of the 2023 fall season on Saturday, October 28, competing at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the Schuylkill River.
It was an unexpectedly warm October day, which presented optimal conditions for the participants in this year’s race.
Leading the charge for the Mountaineers were the duo of junior Violet Hewett and freshman Teegan Wendley in the pair event. Their synchronized efforts set a fast pace throughout the challenging course.
In the four-plus coxswain event, freshman Samantha Krankowski stroked the boat, supported by a team, consisting of Hewett, senior Katherine Capitan, senior Laurna Atkins, and senior coxswain Emily DeGlopper. Despite the challenging crosswinds, DeGlopper steered the boat successfully and was outstanding with her navigation skill.
The doubles event marked the culmination of the racing for the day, featuring Krankowski and sophomore Emma Higgins, as well as the pair of Atkins and Wendley. Rowing in sculling boats presented several challenges, but the four rowers tackled the course with composure and determination.
