Theoretically, any type of electrochemical battery can catch fire if it ends up being destroyed so that its cathode and anode come into contact over a large area. The higher the degree of charge and the energy density of a battery, the more intense the effect will be, that’s why lithium-ion batteries can burn even more intensely, and the thermal runaway effect can in turn lead to an irreversible self-destruction process , with heat releases. However, in the meantime new batteries try to fight these risks through automated disconnections, through safer internal constructions, through other materials used. It is important, however, that their recycling takes place correctly, because there the batteries will be chipped after they are initially decommissioned. Destroying them together with the whole car is prohibited, and the Finns also did an experiment with several types of batteries, to show why it is so important to recycle lithium-ion batteries and what can happen if they are destroyed by flattening.

They used very small batteries in the experiment, and mobile phones, and larger batteries, including batteries from electric bicycles. None of the batteries were ultra-modern car batteries, but the experiment is still useful to understand what can happen to these batteries.

The Finns turned to the author of a YouTube channel, who owns a large hydraulic press, with the help of which they subject all kinds of materials and objects to resistance tests. Because there was a risk of fire, he brought his press with a truck to a test site, outside his house, and a team of firefighters monitored the experiment.

This time the role of the press was not to measure the force to which an object yields, but what happens to the battery after destruction. Most of them released flames at some point, and some of them, more energetically dense, generated real short fires, at one point it even seemed that the press would be affected due to the high temperatures.

But there were also batteries that did not catch fire even with repeated pressing, which also certifies the evolution in this segment. Anyway, even if there are apparently harmless batteries in such scenarios, they must be recycled, because recycling technologies have already reached the stage where 95% and more of the entire construction of a set of batteries can be recycled, to reach raw materials for the production of the next battery.
