VINNYTSIA – Schools will switch to online from Monday in the central Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia, after an outbreak of Hepatitis A left a number of children and adults hospitalized, the country’s chief sanitation official said at the weekend.
“The main thing now is to establish the epicenter of the outbreak and its causes in order to stop the spread of the Hepatitis A virus among the population as soon as possible,” Chief Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
Kuzin, who also serves as Ukraine’s deputy health minister, said 141 people in the city and region were hospitalized. Vinnytsia, which had a pre-war population of around 370,000, is the administrative center of the Vinnytsia region in central Ukraine.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hepatitis A is a short-term liver infection that is highly contagious and can be spread through close contact or eating contaminated food or drink.
People who contract Hepatitis A may feel ill for a few weeks to a few months, but will usually recover fully – unless they are in a high-risk group or have a pre-existing health condition.
“So far, there is no definite cause for this outbreak,” Kuzin said.
“We are analyzing the hotspots and working with the community, especially to build contact rings.”
