Wang met with the US President and other senior officials this week, and the two sides agreed on Friday to hold a meeting between the two presidents next month.
Biden invited his Chinese counterpart to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco in mid-November, in light of tension in relations between the two superpowers. The Chinese President did not confirm his attendance.
At an event organized by the Aspen Strategic Research Institute in Washington, Wang said, “The two sides hope to achieve stability and improve bilateral relations as soon as possible, and agreed to work together to hold a summit in San Francisco between the two heads of state,” according to China’s state news agency Xinhua. ).
Wang warned, according to the agency, that “the road to San Francisco is full of obstacles.”
The last meeting between Biden and Xi dates back to the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022.
Relations between the world’s two largest economic powers have deteriorated for years as competition intensifies between them to extend their influence in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, while Beijing strengthens its cooperation with Russia in an attempt to limit American hegemony.
On Saturday, Wang said that the two sides should “eliminate interference, overcome obstacles, enhance consensus and accumulate results,” according to Xinhua.
