Five days after four North Koreans defected using a wooden boat across the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the East Sea, a South Korean Navy patrol ship discovered a North Korean ship drifting in nearby waters and crossed the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the East Sea to provide humanitarian aid to the North Korean ship.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 29th, our military’s maritime patrol aircraft detected an unknown vessel in captivity 200km east of the East Sea and about 3km north of the NLL while patrolling at around 2:16 p.m. on the same day, and dispatched a patrol ship. The patrol aircraft visually captured an unknown ship drifting, holding a white object and requesting rescue. Afterwards, a dispatched patrol ship approached the unknown ship and confirmed it to be a North Korean ship.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North Korean ship had been adrift for 10 days and hoped to return to North Korea. Accordingly, two South Korean military high-speed boats announced that they provided food and water requested by the North Korean ship on a humanitarian basis. In this process, the Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that the high-speed boat temporarily crossed the NLL after notifying the UNC. It is known that North Korea did not respond to our military’s notification using the International Merchant Marine Communication Network.

Hamcham added, “We are also informing North Korea of the situation and providing support using the UNC and the International Merchant Marine Communication Network so that they can rescue ships in distress.” The military communication lines in the East and West Sea regions and the communication lines of the North-South joint liaison office under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Unification have been cut off since April 7.
