The Most Expensive Materials Ever: Asteroids and Endohedral Fullerenes

During this time, the symbol of wealth was jewelry, such as gold or diamonds. In fact, there are still many materials that are much more expensive than that. This is because these materials are very rare or difficult to obtain.

According to Chris Impey, a professor of astronomy from the University of Arizona on the page Science Alerthere are some of the most expensive materials ever and their estimated prices. Check this out!

1. Asteroid

Reported National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the sun. The shape is not round, but jagged and irregular. They vary in size, from as small as a pebble to as big as a building.

The largest asteroid is Ceres, with a diameter of 939.4 kilometers and located in the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. Apart from Ceres, other asteroids that are no less large are Vesta (525 kilometers in diameter) and Pallas (513 kilometers in diameter).

The price of asteroids is very expensive, namely 4.7 million dollars or around Rp. 74.7 billion per gram. Compare this with the price of gold which is “only” IDR 1,026,519 per gram. This is the gold price as of Saturday (28/10/2023) at 15.18 WIB.

2. Endohedral fullerenes

The next is endohedral fullerenes, which was first discovered in 1985 and described as a small spherical carbon ‘cage’ with nitrogen atoms trapped inside. The atoms in the cage are very stable, which makes the device global positioning system (GPS) and time recording devices are becoming more accurate.

The price reaches 141 million dollars (Rp. 2.2 trillion) per gram. One of the producing parties endohedral fullerenes is Designer Carbon Materials, which is still associated with Oxford University, England.
