Rhine-Ruhr Express RRX Expansion: Construction Work Causes Delays and Reroutes in Leverkusen – Updates

Leverkusen – The expansion of the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) between Langenfeld and Leverkusen is coming to an end. In the coming weeks, regional and long-distance trains will have to be rerouted due to the construction work, as Deutsche Bahn announced.

From Friday, buses will run instead of trains between Düsseldorf main station and Cologne-Mühlheim. The construction work will therefore take longer than originally planned and will be delayed by two weeks until September 8th.

From this Friday (9 p.m.) until September 8th, Regional Express 1 and 5 trains will be rerouted. The stops in Düsseldorf-Benrath and Leverkusen Mitte are no longer available on both lines, and the RE5 also does not stop in Cologne-Mülheim, Cologne Messe/Deutz and Cologne Central Station.

The S6 is also no longer available between Düsseldorf main station and Cologne-Mülheim. Buses are used in rail replacement services.

Deutsche Bahn buses instead of trains: construction work on a popular excursion route!

In long-distance traffic, from Saturday to Friday, September 8th, all trains between Cologne and Düsseldorf or Dortmund will be rerouted via Hilden or Solingen. This increases the travel time by around 20 minutes. The background is work on new switches and the new electronic signal box.

The section is part of the major RRX expansion project. The aim is for a fast regional express to run every 15 minutes on the 120 kilometers of trains between Cologne and Dortmund. The work between Langenfeld and Leverkusen began last June.
