Police Deployed to Prevent Demonstrations in Nîmes: Maintaining Public Order and Defying Ban

The police were deployed this Saturday afternoon along avenue Feuchères. A device which dissuaded demonstrators from defying the ban.

The prefect of Gard Jérôme Bonet had banned, yesterday afternoon, the two demonstrations planned for this Saturday in Nîmes: one for peace and the other in support of Palestine. A ban likely to prevent disturbances to public order.

Contacted today by telephone, the prefecture services mentioned “a device adapted to maintaining public order”. Eight vehicles were deployed around Avenue Feuchères and no demonstration was initiated. “We came to warn those who were not informed that the demonstration for world peace was canceled”indicated Jean-Marc Philibert, member of the Concertation Citoyenne collective.

In a similar posture, a few people came to sit near the Pradier fountain, planted in the center of the esplanade, to express their solidarity with the citizens who are suffering in Palestine. “We respect the ban but as citizens we cannot allow civilians in the dark to be bombed without taking action. France is no longer neutral today, to the detriment of thousands of lives and our freedoms since we no longer have the right to demonstrate. The fact that we are here today goes beyond any religious affiliation”, explains Hana, who came with her family. Hana left, taking with her the feeling of having accomplished a civic act in the company of her children.
