WYOMING, MI — University of Michigan Health-West is partnering with the city of Wyoming to help residents safely discard prescriptions, over-the-counter medication and controlled substances Saturday as part of National Drug Take Back Day.
The event is happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UM Health-West’s Professional Building, 2122 Health Dr. SW. Medications and controlled substances will be accepted anonymously by trained staff with no questions asked, according to a news release.
“The Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for community members to help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths,” said Pete Haverkamp, director of pharmacy at UM Health-West. “I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to clean out your medicine cabinets and bring your unneeded prescription drugs to be disposed of safely. Something this simple can make our homes and community safer and help fight the opioid epidemic.”
In previous years, 240 pounds of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications were collected at Drug Take Bake Day events. The substances were incinerated at a Kent County waste to energy facility.
Besides the UM Health-West event, there are four year-round SafeMeds drop-off sites in Wyoming, including at the Department of Public Safety building. Residents can drop off prescription and over-the-counter medications at 2300 DeHoop Ave. SW from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
