Hanover (dpa/lni) – Only very few employees in Lower Saxony take advantage of the opportunity to take educational leave. Last year, 39,958 people in the country took advantage of the further training offers. That’s not even two percent. This emerges from statistics from the Ministry of Culture in Hanover. Most people on educational leave are between 50 and 60 years old and are employed.
The larger the company, the more employees took advantage of their entitlement to five days a year. Employees can take advantage of offers for up to ten days in two years. In 2018, the ministry reported 43,306 educational leaves, a year later 44,076 and in the Corona year 2020 the number fell to 28,418. In 2021 there were 33,824 participants.
“As was to be expected, the number of participants fell during Corona times, but has largely recovered,” said a ministry spokeswoman. “This is certainly also due to the fact that the ministry has approved the implementation as an online or hybrid format.”
If the application is approved, the employer continues to pay the wages while the employee covers the seminar costs. The offers range from Italian for beginners or payroll accounting to health topics. Educational time can provide impetus for professional and personal development or even reorientation. “The willingness to participate is not as strong as one would like,” said a spokesman, “but there are very attractive offers.”
