Severe Storm Causes Damage in Ukraine: Trees Toppled and Power Outages Reported

On Saturday, October 28, strong winds with gusts of up to 23 m/s are raging in a number of regions of Ukraine, and rain is pouring. In Kyiv, the hurricane felled trees en masse, and in the Lviv and Rivne regions some settlements were left without electricity.

The day before, a storm warning was announced throughout the country; by the end of the day, wind gusts of up to 30 m/s are expected to increase in the northern regions. How reported in the Kyiv Patrol Police, a strong wind felled a tree on the Brest-Litovskoe highway in the direction of Kyiv, so traffic there is partially complicated. Law enforcement officers urged drivers to take this information into account when planning their route.

Trees are falling in the capital itself, in some places directly on the cars of Kiev residents.

And in Obolon, on Vladimir Ivasyuk Avenue, a structure used to fence off landfills washed out onto the road.

The wind also knocked down a concrete fence and walked along the walls of multi-story buildings.

The rampant nature, in some places with precipitation, also affected other regions of Ukraine. The Lviv and Rivne regions were partially left without electricity. According to the head of the Lviv OVA Maxim Kozitsky, as of 8:14 a.m., 132 settlements were de-energized in the region (49 completely, 83 partially). For restoration, 240 Lvovoblenergo specialists and 84 pieces of equipment were involved.

In the Rivne region, bad weather led to shutdowns of about 30 power lines. The Rivne district suffered the most, said the head of the OVA Vitaly Koval.

In the Zhytomyr region, Vinnytsia region, and Rivne region, wind gusts of up to 23 m/s were recorded already in the morning, local media reported. Forecasters predict that the cyclone will move further east in the coming hours.

The wind will increase to extreme levels (23-30 m/s) in the Kiev region, Chernihiv region, Sumy region and Poltava region, and gusts of 18-24 m/s are expected in other regions of the north, center and east.

In the south 13-18 m/s, in Odessa and Chernomorsk 9-13 m/s. The western regions have almost passed the peak of the anomaly in the morning; wind gusts during the day will reach 12-18 m/s.

In advance, weather forecasters and rescuers warned of danger. In Ukraine there was announced a storm warning. Significant rain and gusts of up to 30 m/s were forecast in some areas.

Ukrainians were advised to stay away from spreading trees, construction sites, billboards and power lines, not to leave cars in places where there is a threat, to tightly close windows, doors and attics, and to remove things from balconies that could fall onto the street.
