After the Marburg Mercenaries withdrew from the national leagues, the AFVD was required to determine the consequences for the 2024 league planning.
With the resolution of October 20, 2023, the license statute §2 / 4b applied. This means that the ifm Razorbacks are ranked 7th in the final table of the southern relay and will therefore also start in ERIMA GFL 1 in 2024.
After the disappointing season and the final defeat in Munich, the ifm Razorbacks were in last place in the southern relay. The Upper Swabians had to cancel the relegation against the champions of the GFL2 South, the Kirchdorf Wildcats.
This extremely demanding decision was made after careful consideration by the department management and the coaching crew led by the then head coach Sascha Brändle. This happened against the background of a continued deterioration in the injury situation and the withdrawal of some key players for personal reasons for the upcoming relegation dates.
In addition, the financial component played a significant role, as a five-figure sum would have been required to provide a stadium suitable for the GFL1. The grandstand that was built specifically for this season in the TSB stadium in Ravensburg was dismantled after the last home game for cost reasons, and the Lindenhof stadium in Weingarten was not yet available at that time.
“It was a hard decision, but after the defeat in the last regular season game in Munich we came to terms with it and started planning for the GFL2 2024,” says department head Frank Kienzle, describing the last few weeks.
After the report from Marburg, these plans continued and the Lindenhof Stadium in Weingarten, an excellent venue, was secured for the 2024 season. After the departure of head coach Sascha Brändle, the Upper Swabians also presented their new head coach for 2024, coach John Gilligan.
Frank Kienzle “Of course we knew about the AFVD’s possible decision for us to stay in the ERIMA GFL1. But we made all the plans regardless of league affiliation.”
With the AFVD’s decision, the Upper Swabians’ plans will now focus on another season in the highest German league. According to current status, the Upper Swabians will host six home games in the Lindenhof Stadium in 2024. It is already clear that the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes can be welcomed to the tower city as part of the interconference games.
In addition, the Saarland Hurricanes, the Allgäu Comets and the Straubing Spiders will travel safely to Ravensburg. The league will only announce the other opponents and the exact dates in the next few months.
The ifm Razorbacks are looking forward to the coming 2024 season in the ERIMA GFL 1 and a reunion with their fans in the TeleData Stadium at Lindenhof, as the Lindenhof Stadium in Weingarten has recently been called.
