In order to protect the environment from destruction, legislators and courts in more and more countries are giving it its own legal status. The Klamath River in California was declared a legal entity, the Indian rivers Ganges and Yamuna were recognized as “living human entities”, Ecuador has incorporated the rights of nature into its constitution.

In Bavaria, a referendum is fighting for citizens to be able to file a lawsuit “in the name of nature” to protect it from exploitation and destruction. What speaks for and against this idea?
